Hi, I’m Julia

I’m a freelance writer, editor and communications consultant specialising in food and drink.

About me

I am a writer, editor and consultant with nearly 20 years of experience in the media.

For 15 of those years, I’ve reported on, analysed and worked with the food, drink and grocery retail industries.

I spent nine years as a journalist at The Grocer, including five years as managing editor.

Today, I use my experience of writing for a senior fmcg and grocery retail audience to advise on thought leadership, trade communications and content strategy.

How I can help you

I work on a wide range of B2B communications, content and insight projects for the food, drink and grocery retail industries. If you’re interested in…

  • Getting coverage in the trade press for your views as much as your news

  • Becoming the go-to expert on a subject or issue

  • Staying on top of the latest trends, themes and talking points in food

  • Finding fresh angles for thought leadership pieces

  • Making a meaningful contribution to your sector’s most important debates

  • Publishing articles, whitepapers, newsletters and reports that people actually want to read

  • Engaging with senior decision-makers through thought leadership, webinars and roundtables

  • Improving your communications, storytelling and pitching skills

…there’s a good chance I can help.

Who I work with

Most of my clients are food and drink manufacturers and their PR agencies.

I also work with trade associations as well as tech companies, creative agencies and professional services firms that want to reach more people in the fmcg and grocery retail sectors.

How I work with clients

Every client and project is different, but here’s what most of my arrangements look like:

Thought leadership: Many of my clients hire me to help them get started with thought leadership, build a pipeline of content and find fresh angles and ideas for thought leadership articles, newsletters and reports. I will often interview a client’s senior execs or subject matter experts, identify their most interesting talking points and then work with them - and sometimes the comms team - to develop these into thought leadership. In most cases I also write the content, but some clients like to produce their own based on my ideas and advice.

Hosting and chairing events: I regularly host webinars, conferences and roundtable discussions for clients. Recently, I've chaired debates on topics including ultra-processed foods, generative AI, health messaging and price-marked packs. I've also been hired to interview senior executives for investor events and to prepare execs for debates and panel discussions.

Training sessions and workshops: For clients looking to boost their communications and storytelling capabilities, I run online and in-person training sessions. My most popular sessions include ‘Building your profile in the trade media’ and my ‘Thought leadership masterclass’. I customise the content and format for each client, so they’re right for them. I also offer media training.

Insight reports and briefings: To support their thought leadership efforts and keep on top of fast-moving industry trends and events, some clients hire me to produce custom insight reports, briefings and newsletters. For example, I currently write a monthly category insight report for a large food manufacturer and also produce quarterly executive briefings on emerging trends. Clients appreciate that I know how to separate the signal from the noise, can spell out what new developments might mean for their category and draw on many and varied sources. (To get a taste of what I read in a given week, check out my newsletter, The Trim.)

Trade media and content audit: Larger companies and PR agencies often ask me to review their current presence in the trade media and any thought leadership content they already have on their own website or LinkedIn. I provide detailed feedback, identify strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities, and offer strategic recommendations.

Coaching calls: I offer monthly coaching and strategy calls on a six or 12-month retainer. These are a great option for smaller brands and agencies, or those who want to do their own trade PR but could do with some strategic direction, additional ideas and a pair of fresh eyes. With coaching calls, you get an hour a month to make meaningful progress on an important aspect of your comms, PR or content strategy, whether it’s brainstorming ideas for thought leadership, finding the right angle for a press release or maximising your share of voice in a feature or category report.
